Yamagata prefecture is located in the Tōhoku region of Honshu, with the division of 35 municipalities including 13 cities, 19 towns and 3 villages. Yamagata is the capital and largest city of Yamagata prefecture with a population of 248 thousand in 2021. The neighboring prefectures are Akita Prefecture to the north, Miyagi Prefecture to the east, Fukushima Prefecture to the south, and Niigata Prefecture to the southwest.

• The 13 cities are Higashine City, Kaminoyama City, Murayama City, Nagai City, Nanyo City, Obanazawa City, Sagae City, Sakata City, Shinjo City, Tendo City, Tsuruoka City, Yamagata City, and Yonezawa City.
• The 19 towns are Asahi-machi, Funagata-machi, Iide-machi, Kaneyama-machi, Mamurogawa-machi, Mikawa-machi, Mogami-machi, Nakayama-machi, Nishikawa-machi, Oe-machi, Oguni-machi, Oishida-machi, Shirataka-machi, Shonai-machi, Takahata-machi, Yamanobe-machi, Yuza-machi, Kahoku-cho, and Kawanishi-cho.
