Tottori prefecture is located in the Chūgoku region of Honshu, with the division of 19 municipalities including 4 cities, 14 towns and one village. Tottori is the capital and largest city of Tottori prefecture with a population of 183 thousand in 2021. The neighboring prefectures are Shimane Prefecture to the west, Hiroshima Prefecture to the southwest, Okayama Prefecture to the south, and Hyōgo Prefecture to the east.

• The 4 cities are Kurayoshi City, Sakaiminato City, Tottori City, and Yonago City.
• The 14 towns are Chizu-cho, Daisen-cho, Hokuei-cho, Houki-cho, Iwami-cho, Kofu-cho, Kotoura-cho, Misasa-cho, Nanbu-cho, Nichinan-cho, Wakasa-cho, Yazu-cho, Yurihama-cho, and Hino-machi (Tokyo). The one village is Hiezu-son.

Tottori, the least populous prefecture in Japan, is located in the Chūgoku region on the island of Honshū. The capital and largest city, Tottori, had an estimated population of 183,383 as of November 2022, with a population density of 240 persons per km². Tottori Prefecture, with a population of 553,000 as of October 2020, is known for its sand dunes and as the home prefecture of the celebrated manga creator Mizuki Shigeru. The area is also famous for its agricultural products, including rakkyō scallions, Nijisseiki nashi pears, and zuwaigani crab, as well as inshū washi, a form of traditional Japanese paper.

Economy

Tottori is a regional center for commerce, and its agricultural products, including rice and scallions, are notable. The Tottori Sand Dunes, a popular tourist attraction, are important not only for tourism but also as a center for research into arid agriculture, hosting Tottori University’s Arid Land Research Center. The prefecture is also known for its fine seafood, and the city of Sakaiminato is the hometown of manga creator Mizuki Shigeru, featuring a museum dedicated to his works and many bronze statues of the supernatural creatures from his stories.
