Shimane prefecture is located in the Chūgoku region of Honshu, with the division of 19 municipalities including 8 cities, 10 towns and one village. Matsue is the capital and largest city of Shimane prefecture with a population of 202 thousand in 2021. The neighboring prefectures are Yamaguchi Prefecture to the southwest, Hiroshima Prefecture to the south, and Tottori Prefecture to the east.

• The 8 cities are Gotsu City, Hamada City, Izumo City, Masuda City, Matsue City, Oda City, Unnan City, and Yasugi City.
• The 10 towns are Ama-cho, Iinan-cho, Misato-cho, Nishinoshima-cho, Okinoshima-cho, Okuizumo-cho, Onan-cho, Tsuwano-cho, Yoshika-cho, and Kawamoto-machi. The one village is Chibu-mura.

Population

• As of February 1, 2021, Shimane Prefecture had a population of 665,205, ranking 46th in Japan. The majority of the population is concentrated in the Izumo-Matsue area and along the coastline, with the capital, Matsue, having the smallest population among all 47 prefectural capitals. Shimane also has the largest percentage of elderly people, with a high number of centenarians per million inhabitants .

Economy

• Shimane Prefecture’s economy is diverse, with contributions from rice farming, sea fishing, and traditional crafts. The prefecture is known for its production of shijimi clams, sea fishing, and Unshū abacuses. Additionally, the historic Iwami Ginzan silver mine, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is a significant part of the prefecture’s cultural and economic heritage.

Importance

• Shimane Prefecture is home to Izumo Taisha, one of Japan’s most sacred Shintō shrines, and Matsue Castle, a national treasure with architecture dating back 400 years. The region’s association with Japanese deities and its historical significance make it an important cultural hub. The prefecture’s natural beauty, including Lake Shinji and the Oki Islands, adds to its appeal. Furthermore, the disputed Liancourt Rocks, which the prefecture claims jurisdiction over, contribute to its geopolitical importance.
