Shiga prefecture is located in the Kansai region of Honshu, with the division of 19 municipalities including 13 cities and 6 towns. Ōtsu is the capital and largest city of Shiga prefecture with a population of 343 thousand in 2021. The neighboring prefectures are Fukui Prefecture to the north, Gifu Prefecture to the northeast, Mie Prefecture to the southeast, and Kyoto Prefecture to the west.

• The 13 cities are Higashiomi City, Hikone City, Koka City, Konan City, Kusatsu City, Maibara City, Moriyama City, Nagahama City, Omihachiman City, Otsu City, Ritto City, Takashima City, and Yasu City.
• The 6 towns are Aisyo-cho, Koura-cho, Ryuo-cho, Taga-cho, Toyosato-cho, and Hino-machi (Tokyo).

Population

• As of October 2020, Shiga Prefecture had a population of approximately 1,414,000 people, with a concentration in the southern and eastern areas, particularly around Lake Biwa. The population has been increasing, especially in areas within commuting distance to Kyoto and Osaka.

Economy

• Shiga Prefecture’s economy is diverse, with significant contributions from agriculture, manufacturing, and specialized products such as hairdressing appliances, scales, and the renowned Ōmi beef. The prefecture is also known for its production of fine tea and the early fermented form of sushi known as funazushi, made with carp from Lake Biwa.

Importance

• Shiga Prefecture is home to Lake Biwa, Japan’s largest freshwater lake, accounting for one-sixth of the prefecture’s total area. The prefecture’s natural beauty, historical buildings, and festivals rank among those of national significance. Shiga has 807 National Treasures and Important Cultural Properties, including the well-preserved Hikone Castle, one of Japan’s four national treasure castles. The prefecture is also known for its ties to historical figures and events, and it boasts a rich cultural and historical heritage.
