Okayama prefecture is a prefecture of Japan located in the Chūgoku region of Honshu, with the division of 27 municipalities: 15 cities including the designated city (Okayama city with 4 wards ), 10 towns and two villages. Okayama city is the capital of Okayama with a population of 720 thousand in 2021. The neighboring prefectures are Tottori Prefecture to the north, Hyōgo Prefecture to the east, and Hiroshima Prefecture to the west.

• The 15 Cities are designated city of Okayama, and 14 other cities, which are Akaiwa City, Asakuchi City, Bizen City, Ibara City, Kasaoka City, Kurashiki City, Maniwa City, Mimasaka City, Niimi City, Setouchi City, Soja City, Takahashi City, Tamano City, and Tsuyama City.
• Okayama city has 4 wards which are Higashi-ku, Kita-ku, Minami-ku, and Naka-ku.
• The 10 towns of Okayama prefecture are Hayashima-cho, Kagamino-cho, Kibichuo-cho, Kumenan-cho, Misaki-cho, Nagi-cho, Satosho-cho, Shou-cho, Wake-cho, and Yakage-cho. Two villages are Nishiawakura-son, Shinjo-son.

The prefecture is also recognized for its production of high-quality Bizen pottery, a traditional Japanese pottery with a history spanning over 1,000 years. Furthermore, Okayama is home to thriving industries including manufacturing, textile production, and machinery, contributing significantly to the local and national economy.

Importance

Okayama Prefecture holds cultural and historical significance as it is the setting for the well-known Japanese folktale “Momotaro” (Peach Boy) and is home to the iconic Okayama Castle, also known as “Crow Castle” due to its distinct black exterior. The Korakuen Garden, one of the Three Great Gardens of Japan, is another testament to the prefecture’s historical and cultural importance. Moreover, Okayama serves as a major transportation hub, connecting the Chugoku and Shikoku regions, further solidifying its significance within Japan.
