Ōita prefecture is located on the island of Kyūshū, with the division of 18 municipalities including 14 cities, 3 towns and one village. Ōita is the capital and largest city of Ōita prefecture with a population of 477 thousand in 2021. The neighboring prefectures are Fukuoka Prefecture to the northwest, Kumamoto Prefecture to the southwest, and Miyazaki Prefecture to the south.

• The 14 cities are Beppu City, Bungoono City, Bungotakada City, Hita City, Kitsuki City, Kunisaki City, Nakatsu City, Oita City, Saiki City, Taketa City, Tsukumi City, Usa City, Usuki City, and Yufu City.
• The 3 towns are Hiji-machi, Kokonoe-machi, and Kusu-machi. The one village is Himeshima-mura.

Ōita Prefecture, located in northeast Kyūshū, Japan, is known for its hot springs, deep history, and abundant natural beauty. As of October 2020, the prefecture had a population of 1,124,000 and covers an area of 6,341 km². The capital city, Ōita, is the most populous city in the prefecture, with an estimated population of 474,804 as of November 2023.

Economy

Ōita has a diverse economy, with a significant agricultural sector producing rice, staple vegetables, citrus fruits like kabosu, and wagyū cattle. Forestry and fisheries also contribute significantly to the prefecture’s economy. Additionally, manufacturing output includes transportation equipment, metals, and industrial chemicals.

Importance

The prefecture is famed for its hot springs, particularly in Beppu and Yufuin, known as some of Japan’s finest onsen resorts. Furthermore, the region’s historical and cultural significance is evident in sites such as the ancient stone Buddhas in Usuki, the remote Kunisaki Peninsula with its historic temples and shrines, and the 1,300-year-old Usa Jingū, set amidst the natural beauty of Mount Futago. Ōita’s rich heritage, natural resources, and cultural landmarks underscore its importance as a tourist destination and a region with a unique blend of tradition and natural wonders.
