Nara prefecture is located in the Kansai region of Honshu, with the division of 39 municipalities including 12 cities, 15 towns and 12 villages. Nara is the capital of Nara prefecture with a population of 367 thousand in 2021. The neighboring prefectures are Kyoto Prefecture to the north, Osaka Prefecture to the northwest, Wakayama Prefecture to the southwest, and Mie Prefecture to the east.

• The 12 cities are Gojo City, Gose City, Ikoma City, Kashiba City, Kashihara City, Katsuragi City, Nara City, Sakurai City, Tenri City, Uda City, Yamatokoriyama City, and Yamatotakada City.
• The 15 towns are Ando-cho, Heguri-cho, Ikaruga-cho, Kanmaki-cho, Kawai-cho, Kawanishi-cho, Koryo-cho, Miyake-cho, Oji-cho, Oyodo-cho, Sango-cho, Shimoichi-cho, Takatori-cho, Tawaramoto-cho, and Yoshino-cho

Nara Prefecture is renowned for its historical significance, cultural heritage, and picturesque landscapes. As of December 2020, the prefecture had a population of 1,321,805 people, with a density of 358.10/km2. Nara is characterized by its diverse economic profile, with significant contributions from industries such as manufacturing, services, and agriculture. The GDP of Nara was reported at JP¥ 3,925 billion (US$ 36.0 billion) in 2019, with manufacturing holding the largest share at 20.2%, followed by services and real estate.

Nara Prefecture holds the distinction of having more UNESCO World Heritage listings than any other prefecture in Japan, highlighting its historical and cultural significance. The region was the former capital of Japan during the Nara period from 710 to 794, and is home to numerous temples, shrines, and ruins, including the Tōdai-ji, Kōfuku-ji, Kasuga Shrine, and others, collectively forming the Historic Monuments of Ancient Nara, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The prefecture’s rich history, archeological significance, and natural beauty make it a center for tourism, with its natural environment and historical significance being treated as some of the most important features of Nara by the prefectural government.
