Nagano prefecture is located in the Chūbu region of Honshū, with the division of 77 municipalities including 19 cities, 23 towns and 35 villages. Nagano is the capital and largest city of Nagano prefecture with a population of 370 thousand in 2021. The neighboring prefectures are Niigata Prefecture to the north, Gunma Prefecture to the northeast, Saitama Prefecture to the east, Yamanashi Prefecture to the southeast, Shizuoka Prefecture and Aichi Prefecture to the south, and Gifu Prefecture and Toyama Prefecture to the west.

• The 19 cities are Azumino City, Chikuma City, Chino City, Iida City, Iiyama City, Ina City, Komagane City, Komoro City, Matsumoto City, Nagano City, Nakano City, Okaya City, Omachi City, Saku City, Shiojiri City, Suwa City, Suzaki City, Tomi City, and Ueda City.
• The 23 towns are Agematsu-machi, Fujimi-machi, Iijima-machi, Iizuna-machi, Kiso-machi, Koumi-machi, Matsukawa-machi, Minowa-machi, Miyota-machi, Nagawa-machi, Nagiso-machi, Obuse-machi, Sakaki-machi, Shimosuwa-machi, Shinano-machi, Takamori-machi, Tateshina-machi, Tatsuno-machi, Yamanouchi-machi, Anan-cho, Ikeda-cho, Karuizawa-cho, and Sakho-cho.

Nagano Prefecture is known for its picturesque mountainous landscapes and historical significance. As of September 2021, the prefecture had a population of approximately 2.05 million people, spread across an area of 13,585 square kilometers.

Nagano’s economy is diverse, with a focus on agriculture, manufacturing, and tourism. The prefecture is a major producer of fruits such as apples, grapes, and peaches, and is also known for its soba (buckwheat noodles) production. Furthermore, Nagano is recognized for hosting the 1998 Winter Olympics, an event that brought international attention to the region and significantly boosted its prominence as a winter sports destination. The prefecture’s rich historical heritage, including its numerous temples and shrines, as well as its natural beauty with the Japanese Alps, make Nagano an important cultural and tourist destination within Japan.
