Kanagawa prefecture is located in the Kantō region of Honshu, with the division of 33 municipalities including 19 cities (including three designated cities, i.e., Yokohama, Kawasaki and Sagamihara), 13 towns and one village. Yokohama is the capital and largest city of Kanagawa Prefecture and the second-largest city in Japan with a population of 3.8 million in 2021. The neighboring prefectures are Tokyo to the north, Yamanashi Prefecture to the northwest and Shizuoka Prefecture to the west.

• The 19 cities are three designated cities and 16 ordinary cities, which are Atsugi City, Ayase City, Chigasaki City, Ebina City, Fujisawa City, Hadano City, Hiratsuka City, Isehara City, Kamakura City, Minamiashigara City, Miura City, Odawara City, Yamato City, Yokosuka City, Zama City, and Zushi City.
• The 13 towns and one village are Aikawa-machi, Hakone-machi, Hayama-machi, Kaisei-machi, Manazuru-machi, Matsuda-machi, Nakai-machi, Ninomiya-machi, Oi-machi, Oiso-machi, Samukawa-machi, Yamakita-machi, Yugawara-machi, and Kiyokawa-mura.
• The 18 wards for Yokohama designated city are Aoba-ku, Asahi-ku, Hodogaya-ku, Isogo-ku, Izumi-ku, Kanagawa-ku, Kanazawa-ku, Kōhoku-ku, Kōnan-ku, Midori-ku, Minami-ku, Naka-ku (administrative center), Nishi-ku, Sakae-ku, Seya-ku, Totsuka-ku, Tsurumi-ku, and Tsuzuki-ku.
• Kawasaki designated city has seven wards (ku), which are Asao-ku, Kawasaki-ku, Miyamae-ku, Nakahara-ku, Saiwai-ku, Takatsu-ku, and Tama-ku.
• Sagamihara designated city has three wards which are Chuo-ku, Minami-ku, and Midori-ku.

Kanagawa Prefecture is the second-most populous prefecture with a population of approximately 9,221,129 as of April 2022. The prefecture covers an area of 2,415 square kilometers, making it the fifth-smallest prefecture in Japan.

Population and Economy

• Kanagawa Prefecture experienced rapid urbanization post-war, and as of 2015, it had an estimated population of 9,058,094, with a density of 3,770/km².
• With a total GDP of JP¥ 35,205 billion (US$ 323.0 billion in 2019), Kanagawa plays a significant role in Japan’s economy.

Importance

• The eastern half of the prefecture forms a crucial part of the Tokyo-Yokohama Metropolitan Area, with Yokohama being Japan’s second-largest city and a major commercial hub. The prefecture is also a popular tourist area, with cities like Kamakura and Hakone being notable destinations.
• Kanagawa Prefecture’s historical significance is evident from its role as the political and economic center of Japan during the Kamakura period. Additionally, the presence of Mount Fuji in the region adds to its cultural and natural significance.
