Kagoshima prefecture is located on the island of Kyushu and the Ryukyu Islands, with the division of 43 municipalities including 19 cities, 20 towns and 4 villages. Kagoshima is the capital and largest city of Kagoshima prefecture with a population of 595 thousand in 2021. The neighboring prefectures are Miyazaki, Kumamoto and Okinawa.
- The 19 cities are Aira City, Akune City, Amami City, Hioki City, Ibusuki City, Ichikikushikino City, Isa City, Izumi City, Kagoshima City, Kanoya City, Kirishima City, Makurazaki City, Minamikyushu City, Minamisatsuma City, Nishinoomote City, Satsumasendai City, Shibushi City, Soo City, and Tarumizu City.

Population and Economy
The prefecture’s gross domestic product stands at approximately JP¥ 5,773 billion (US$ 53.0 billion in 2019) with a workforce of about 791,000 people.
Kagoshima is a major producer of agricultural exports such as green tea, sweet potatoes, and local Black Wagyu beef. It is also renowned for its bonito flakes, unagi eels, and pork production .
The prefecture is home to Japan’s largest space center, the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), and the Uchinoura Space Center.
Importance
Kagoshima is not only known for its stunning natural scenery, including active and dormant volcanoes, but also for its historical significance as the core of the Satsuma Domain, a prominent Japanese domain of the Edo period and the Meiji Restoration.
The prefecture’s economic complexity index ranks 37th out of the 41 prefectures in Japan, with specialized exports including machinery, ceramics, and woodworking machines
