Capital and Major Cities
- Ternate, an island of the same name, has historically been the administrative center of North Maluku, while Sofifi is being developed to support government operations. Notable cities include Soasiu (on Tidore), Sofifi, Tobelo, Galela, and Kao (all on Halmahera) .
Economy and Natural Resources
- The province’s economy is primarily based on agriculture, forestry, fishing, and mining. Agriculture involves the cultivation of rice, corn, cassava, sweet potatoes, peanuts, and various fruits. Notable cash crops include cocoa, cloves, coconuts, nutmeg, and coffee. Marine fish, especially tuna, and forestry products, including plywood, are significant exports. Mining activities, particularly nickel and gold extraction on Halmahera, contribute to the economy. Although the province has deposits of many other minerals, they had yet to be exploited extensively in the early 21st century.

- The population of North Maluku is highly diverse, and the province has numerous bus terminals, with interisland transport provided by both public and private carriers. The population’s rich cultural and ethnic composition, alongside its natural resources, renders the province important within the Indonesian archipelago.
