Helsinki, the capital and most populous city in Finland, is situated on the shore of the Gulf of Finland, serving as the seat of the Uusimaa region in southern Finland. It holds a significant historical connection with cities such as Tallinn, Estonia; Riga, Latvia; Stockholm, Sweden; and Saint Petersburg, Russia. Together with the cities of Espoo, Vantaa, and Kauniainen, Helsinki forms the metropolitan area, considered Finland’s only metropolis and the world’s northernmost metropolitan area with over one million inhabitants.
Population:
The municipality of Helsinki is home to approximately 0.67 million people, with 1.25 million in the capital region and 1.58 million in the metropolitan area. The city’s population is characterized by its bilingualism, with Finnish and Swedish as its official languages. The majority of the population consists of Finnish speakers, followed by Swedish speakers and individuals speaking other languages1.
Economy and Importance:
Helsinki is the most significant center for politics, education, finance, culture, and research in Finland. It is a major economic, cultural, and scientific region, housing the headquarters of major companies and serving as the regional hub for international companies operating in the country. The city’s economy is primarily service-based, with a focus on information technology and finance. Helsinki contributes approximately one third of the Finnish gross domestic product, with a GDP per capita 1.5 times higher than the national average, making it one of the wealthiest capitals in Europe.
Helsinki Capital Region:
In the strictest sense, the Finnish capital region consists of four municipalities with city status – Helsinki, Vantaa, Espoo, and Kauniainen. This area, often referred to as the Capital region, is the largest urbanized area in the country, with a population of about 1.25 million. The majority of the inhabitants live in the urban areas of the cities, with suburban and rural areas also present within their boundaries.
Helsinki Metropolitan Area (Greater Helsinki):
The Helsinki metropolitan area includes around ten additional municipalities, considered commuter towns and exurbs of Helsinki. These municipalities, along with the capital region, form the world’s northernmost urban area with a population of over one million people. This area has a high concentration of employment, housing density, and large recreational areas. The metropolitan area has a significant impact on the country’s economy, contributing to one third of the Finnish GDP.
Helsinki Sub-region for Statistical Purpose:
The Helsinki metropolitan area differs from the Helsinki sub-region, which includes the municipalities of Karkkila, Lohja, and Siuntio. This sub-region is used for statistical purposes and has a population of about 1.64 million. It is based on cooperation between municipalities and the commuting area, providing valuable statistical insights into the region’s demographics and economic activities.
