The Northern Territory is an Australian territory located in the central and central northern regions of Australia. It shares borders with Western Australia, South Australia, and Queensland, and is bordered by the Timor Sea, the Arafura Sea, and the Gulf of Carpentaria. With a land area of 1,347,791 square kilometers, it is sparsely populated, with a population of approximately 249,000 as of December 2021.
Economy and Importance
Resources and Industries
- The territory’s economy is largely driven by the mining and petroleum sectors, contributing around $2.5 billion to the gross state product and employing over 4,600 people. Mining accounts for a significant portion of the gross state product, with the economy having grown considerably over the past decade.
Tourism and Services
- The tourism sector employs a significant portion of the workforce and generates one of the largest contributions to the territory’s economy. Ecotourism and cultural tourism have become the strongest segments of the sector. The services sector, particularly public administration, community services, education, and health, provides well over half of the territory’s economic output and employment.
Manufacturing and Agriculture
- Manufacturing, particularly alumina and LNG production, has become a significant component of the territory’s economy. However, it still accounts for a small fraction of the territory’s employment. Agriculture, forestry, and fishing constitute only a small proportion of the overall economy, with nearly half of the territory’s area used as grazing land for livestock, predominantly beef cattle, and limited arable farming taking place.
Explanation to the subdivisions.
- Firstly Greater Capital City Statistical Areas (GCCSA) are geographical areas built from Statistical Areas Level 4 (SA4) and are designed to represent the functional extent of each of the eight State and Territory capital cities. A minimum of 100,000 persons was set for the SA4s, although there are some exceptions to this. In regional areas, SA4s tend to have populations closer to the minimum (100,000 – 300,000). In metropolitan areas, the SA4s tend to have larger populations (300,000 – 500,000).
- Secondly, The SA4 regions are the largest sub-State regions in the Main Structure of the Australian Statistical Geography Standard (ASGS), and have been designed for the output of ABS Labor Force Survey data and therefore have population limits imposed by the Labor Force Survey sample.
- Thirdly Statistical Areas Level 3 (SA3) are geographical areas built from whole Statistical Areas Level 2 (SA2). They have been designed for the output of regional data. SA3s are designed to provide a regional breakdown of Australia. They generally have a population of between 30,000 and 130,000 people. In regional areas, SA3s represent the area serviced by regional cities that have a population over 20,000 people. In the major cities, SA3s represent the area serviced by a major transport and commercial hub.
- Finally The Australian Statistical Geography Standard (ASGS) Local Government Areas (LGAs) are an ABS approximation of officially gazetted Local Government Areas as defined by each State and Territory Local Government Department.
Local Government Areas (LGAs)
These LGAs oversee various aspects of local governance, including infrastructure, public services, planning and development, and community initiatives.
