The Australian Capital Territory (ACT) is a federal territory of Australia, located in the southeastern Australian mainland. It serves as the seat of government for the nation and is home to the capital city of Australia, Canberra. Established after Federation, the ACT hosts the headquarters of all important institutions of the country.
Location
The ACT is situated as an enclave completely within the state of New South Wales. It covers a total land area of 2,358 square kilometers, making it the smallest mainland territory, aside from the Jervis Bay Territory. The city of Canberra, which is the primate city of the territory, occupies the northeastern corner of the area. The territory includes the city of Canberra and some towns such as Williamsdale, Oaks Estate, Uriarra Village, Tharwa, and Hall. It also contains agricultural land and a large area of national park, notably the Namadgi National Park.
Districts, Electorates, and Localities.
The urban areas of the Australian Capital Territory are organized into a hierarchy of districts, town centers, group centers, local suburbs, and other industrial areas and villages. There are a total of 19 districts, each of which is divided into smaller suburbs, with most having a town center that serves as the focus of commercial and social activities. The districts were settled in a chronological order, with North Canberra being the first to be mostly settled in the 1920s and ’30s, and Molonglo Valley being the latest, with its first suburbs currently under construction.
