South Carolina, located on the southern Eastern Seaboard of the United States. South Carolina is bordered by North Carolina to the north and northeast, the Atlantic Ocean to the southeast, and Georgia to the southwest across the Savannah River. The capital of South Carolina is Columbia. It is the second-most populous city in the state, with a population of 136,632 as per the 2020 census.

It has a rich and complex history. Settled by the English in 1670, it became the eighth state to ratify the U.S. Constitution in 1788. The state’s early economy relied heavily on agriculture, with a plantation system that utilized Black slave labor. South Carolina played a significant role in the Civil War, being the first state to secede from the Union in 1861. Today, South Carolina is known for its stunning coastline, popular tourist destinations like Myrtle Beach, and famous residents such as James Brown and Jesse Jackson.
